How does this letter find you, dorogusha moya? I hope that all is well in the city, and that Lasha and Papa are taking good care of you. It's crazy of me, I know you are thinking, even as you read this, but I have great concern for your well-being. Not in a material sense, no, never that, but of the kind of well-being usually assured by a mother.
Because we have not that, perhaps an overzealous middle brother has simply taken to fretting in her place.
In your next letter, please, if you must, lie to me, golubka! Tell me that you aren't going about with any unsuitable types when your brother Andrusha is posted far away. Believe me, after having spent some not inconsiderable time now in the military Spetznaz, I know a thing or two about the rougher edges of Russian men.
Of course, there are not only ill-used thugs among the ranks of GRU. My own unit is rarified and beyond reproach, good comrades all, and one beyond even that, that more I would call companion. He is the best kind of friend to me in this concrete acropolis- a utilitarian Ares to my modern Apollo.
We do what we can to pass the time and give each other the small comforts of home.
So you need not worry about me, I have a strong shoulder to lean on here, and in turn I offer him mine.
